Good morning ☕
Make every effort to live in peace
with all men and to be holy;
without holiness no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14 NIV
This Bible verse has a few key words and phrases that I wanted to emphasize today. This is my own interpretation, and I am still learning, so be sure to add any comments below! 😊
Make every effort…
Effort. This means work, action, movement on our part. It doesn’t say that you will trip and fall into peace. Effort is required.
This means that you can’t just keep to yourself or only interact with people who are mostly like you. This means that effort is required to maintain this peace: with your coworkers, with your neighbors, with that woman who smells kind of funny and is nerdy but is generally nice. You know, good people who aren’t perfect, who have quirks, who are maybe going through difficulty in life.
Make every effort…
We can’t be half-hearted about it. “Well, I tried once.” Make every effort means try our best to be peaceful. If one thing doesn’t work, try another.
This can take the form of walking away peacefully, avoiding gossip, not stooping down to someone’s level, not starting conflicts, etc. It all takes effort, but it is all worth it to keep the peace.
…to live in peace with all men
Not just a few. Not just the popular table. Not just the cool parents or neighbors or clique. Not just with your own political party.
Peace is important to keep with all men (people). Does this mean you have to accept sinful behavior and abuse? Not at all! Avoid that, by all means. But live in peace with all means not slinking off to our own clique and antagonizing those outside of our group.
…without holiness no one will see the Lord.
And then the second part: how can you see the Lord when you are always blinded by rage? If you’re always in a state of fighting with others (or being petty, or unforgiving, or miffed), then how can you have the time and emotional capacity to see the Lord?
Make EVERY EFFORT (not just “try a bit”) to live in peace with ALL men (not just “my party/my tribe/my friends/my church”).
Effort, effort, effort!
So that we may see the Lord 😊💞
