I am a makeup hoarder. ☹️
And I don’t mean when I buy in bulk to save money. That actually works out very well for me. I stock up on the items I use most often (moisturizer, primer, liquid eyeliner) when they are on sale, then I “closet shop” when I run out. Super convenient and saves money.
I mean, I had all these older makeup items in a shoe box. I had gathered the items over the past year or two, but never used any of them more than a few times. Then I went on to another item.
Maybe you can relate. Maybe you have more than one lipstick, or maybe you never use the entire tube.
Or maybe you have a bunch of nice shirts that you barely wear.
Maybe you have fine china tucked away, sitting and waiting for a special moment, off in some future time.
Whatever your “thing” is, I suggest you use it and enjoy it!
I went into my shoe box yesterday, and sadly, found that a lot of unused makeup was simply ruined. Items had clumped up, or gotten dirty, or dried out. Items I had saved for a better time were no longer usable. Gone.
This made me wonder… Haven’t I read a Bible verse along these lines? Ah. I searched online for it, and yes I have:
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy,
and where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust destroys,
and where thieves do not break in or steal
That verse was Jesus speaking, so it is of utmost importance.
Appreciating what’s in front of me.
I often give thanks for food, clothing, shelter… For God’s love and forgiveness and protection. You know, the “big” things in life. But, as I sat there with all my hoarded makeup, I didn’t feel silly enough to thank God for my abundance.
And I didn’t feel silly enough to ask for forgiveness for my wasteful attitude, for “storing up” here on earth.
What it means for me to store up treasures in heaven:
Gratitude, generosity, awareness… Those are all intangible, lasting values. For me, right now, storing treasures in heaven means letting go of what I was hoarding (all that silly dried up stuff) and realizing that what’s important is not gathering quantity but enjoying quality.
Why waste money on even more lipstick when I can save that money, then give it to St. Jude’s at the end of the month?
Why let your nice shirts get moth-eaten, when you can wear them or donate them?
Why care so much about the fine china when it’s the people around the table that truly matter?
Some old makeup had me thinking of God’s Word. He doesn’t miss an opportunity to teach 😉 Now I have set aside what I will be using and enjoying until it runs out. Though I’m thankful that I can, I won’t be buying more. I’ll be keeping an eye on both my attitude and the money I save, and then add it up and donate it.
How about you? Is there something you can use and enjoy? Something that will enrich your life and prevent you from storing treasures on earth?
