🌸 Proverbs 31 Woman

πŸ’ Proverbs 31 Woman #6 πŸ’

🌹 Ladies, today’s verse is an interesting one! πŸ’Έ

She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

Proverbs 31:16

I personally find this verse to be quite interesting, because it took me by surprise. Before I began reading the Bible, I had this idea of biblical womanhood. It went something like this: you obey your husband and stay pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen.

So, imagine my surprise when the Proverbs 31 woman is not only taking care of her home, but going out and investing her earnings.

She considers…

I researched commentary on this verse, and most of the commentary highlights this word: considers.

This means that she doesn’t buy in a rash or impulsive way.
She stops to consider whether this will be a proper purchase.

If you’ve ever had buyer’s remorse, you know how important it is to stop and take a moment before you part with your money. The Proverbs 31 woman doesn’t go around wasting her cash. No, she stops and thinks about what she’s buying ~ and whether the purchase will bring good to herself and her family.

Note: Some commentaries see this as a metaphor, where she considers the Word of God carefully, follows it, and thus reaps the good fruit of God’s Word πŸ™‚

… out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

And it is out of her own work that she buys a field, and then plants a vineyard. This also caught my attention, because it is full of meaning. She’s not buying something for the sake of buying something. She’s buying something that is of increasing value.

This means that her purchase is multiplying, or adding value, to herself and her family.

I would sum up the advice of Proverbs 31:16 in the following way:

  • Avoid being an impulsive buyer. Stop for a moment.
  • Think carefully before making your purchases.
  • Ask: Is this purchase going to add value to myself and my family?
  • Ask: Is this something I should spend my savings/earnings on? Or will it just be another thing sitting around the house?
  • Ask: Can I find this cheaper with the same quality elsewhere?

As I’ve become older, and especially as I’ve began to study the Bible, I’ve become less of an impulsive shopper. My weakness is eyeglasses. I even have a pair coming in the mail πŸ€“ But after studying this verse, I think I’ll stop and consider next time I find myself shopping… πŸ€”πŸ’Έ
